Heads Or Tails (2012)
Heads Or Tails (2012)
English | CBR | 199 pages | 554.23 MB

This is an anthology of short comics fiction, previously appearing in books such as Best American Nonrequired Reading.
The creator of 2008’s acclaimed graphic novel The Lagoon — named to many annual critics’ lists including Publishers Weekly and USA Today’s Pop Candy — is back with a stunningly designed and packaged collection of some of the most poetic and confident short fiction being produced in comics today. Carré’s elegant short stories read like the gothic, family narratives of Flannery O’Connor or Carson McCullers, but told visually. Poetic rhythms — a coin flip, a circling ferris wheel — are punctuated by elements of melancholy fantasy pushed forward by character-driven, naturalistic dialogue. The stories in Heads Or Tails display a virtuosic breadth of visual styles and color palettes, each in perfect service of the story, and range from experimental one-pagers to short masterpieces like “The Thing About Madeline” (featured in The Best American Comics 2008), to graphic novellas like “The Carnival” (featured in David Sedaris’ and Dave Eggers’ 2010 Best American Nonrequired Reading, originally published in MOME). Savage Tales #1-10 (2007-2008) Complete
English | CBR | 10 Issues | 249.79 MB

An anthology dedicated to swords & sorcery, Savage Tales proudly upholds the “take no prisoners” attitude of similarly-titled books that have come before. This time around the book is anchored by that red-headed she-devil Red Sonja, drinking and fighting her way through the Hyborian Age. Other regular sagas include “Battle for Atlantis,” tales of the lost continent of Atlantis, “Where Walks the Hunter,” a spin-off character from Red Sonja’s solo comic, and “The Elder Things that Fell to Earth,” set in H. P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos. Crammed with evil sorcerers, dark gods and ancient heroes, this one, as they used to say, has it all.

Joel, a Canadian English-teacher working in a second language school in Korea, has finally had his fill of foreign lands. He’s tried his best to avoid assimilation of Korean culture, stubbornly refusing to learn more than the rudimentary basics of the language, and fearing any unfamiliar foods. His decision to go back to Canada is thwarted, however, when he becomes smitten with a beautiful comics-reading secretary named Hana who works at the second language school. Unfortunately for Joel, his awkwardness at negotiating the cultural currents hinders his relationship with Hana, often with hilarious results. Along the way, Joel discovers that the language of love can be as difficult to learn as any other.

Classic Star Wars Volume 1 - In Deadly Pursuit TPB (1994)
English | CBR | 195 pages | 121.82 MB

If you're like me, you know that all of the Star Wars stuff that keeps coming out cannot possibly measure up to the original movies. However, Classic Star Wars from Goodwin and Williamson recaptures the joy of seeing Star Wars for the first time. The book reproduces the newspaper strips published between 1981 and 1984, but instead of merely reprinting the strips, the images are arranged to be more suitable for the comic book page. The result is sometimes slow and repetitive, though that's easy to forget with the gorgeous art and fun story.
