After Captain America died while helping to stop Onslaught in the same-titled crossover of 1996, Marvel licensed the character out to their old collaborators, Jim Lee and Rob Liefeld, who had since helped established Image Comics.
Continuity was reset with a new issue #1, and the history of the Marvel Universe removed from the equation. For the next year, Iron Man, Captain America, the Fantastic Four, and the Avengers existed in the Heroes Reborn Universe, a pocket dimension created by Franklin Richards.
Cap’s rebooted life placed him in the life of average joe citizen, until a small mishap reveals that his entire life is a lie, and that he’s actually a Super Soldier. Old enemies get new origins, and we even get a female sidekick!
After a year of issues, the Heroes Reborn experiment was finished: the plot lines were finished up, the characters were returned to the mainstream Marvel Universe, and each of the titles rebooted with a new #1 for a third volume.
