In 1957 Los Angeles, Mexican-American journalist Joe Nuñez and washed-up U.S. Army officer Col. John Lear have met and contained the alien slave-catcher, Nimbus. Or have they? As the two men's mutual ambitions come to a head, the slave uprising on The Helix threatens to destroy that planet - even as Nimbus and the final slave on Earth discover they may have an enemy in common. Meanwhile, Nan takes a shower.
